GaMEP: Food Safety & Recall Module
Graduate Coursework: Internship with Georgia Tech
Software: Articulate Storyline
Date: July 2022
Situation: During my graduate internship, I worked with Georgia Tech’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership (GaMEP) to develop an eLearning module for their Food Safety and Recall course. The subject matter expert (SME), a seasoned food safety professional, preferred a direct PowerPoint-to-eLearning conversion rather than a redesigned, learner-centered approach.
Task: My objective was to develop an interactive eLearning module using Articulate Storyline while navigating the challenge of working with a resistant SME who was hesitant to incorporate instructional design best practices.
Action: Partnering with a senior instructional designer, I adapted to the constraints set by the SME, ensuring the module met their expectations while integrating engagement and accessibility enhancements where possible. I focused on maintaining clear, structured content and optimizing interactivity within the boundaries of the SME’s preferences.
Result: The final module provided a digital learning solution aligned with the SME’s vision while still improving content delivery for a manufacturing audience. For portfolio purposes, all proprietary branding and institution-specific materials have been removed, ensuring the module remains a generalizable example of my work in eLearning development. This experience strengthened my ability to collaborate with resistant SMEs, balance stakeholder expectations with instructional design principles, and develop effective eLearning solutions in real-world industry settings.
